Chalkboard Dragon

It’s an average classroom 

Lectures, tests, and grades 

Well known expectations 

I’ve seen it all before 

but 

Here there’s something different 

Resting on the board 

A dragon in the chalk 

Hidden in the outline 

Not erased; not yet 

This dragon is calling 

Through the barriers of time 

Breaking expectations 

Am I the only one who sees? 

It’s ready to step off 

And I’ll be waiting here 

To brush the chalky dust 

From glistening, pristine scales 

And rise

Roaring, and soaring 

Into the sky
