Crochet

for dVerse
and Magpie Tale 151

An elegant tangle is wrought
from soft yarn twisted into
a delicate kind of knot.

Before beginning; careful thought:
wool or cotton, from which jeweled hue
will an elegant tangle be wrought?

Across the fingers keeping taut
and loose; the yarn glides through
to make a delicate kind of knot.

First stitch: hook and slipknot
pull through, a rhythm of redo, redo
thus is an elegant tangle wrought.

Loop and pull; again; it’s caught
between hook and hand anew
crafting a delicate kind of knot.

Forming something from naught
is an ancient joy made new
from which an elegant tangle is wrought
becoming a delicate kind of knot.

  1. very cool villanelle... didn't crochet in a while but did a lot when i was a kid...we used to sit on the lawn and came up with the idea to crochet skirts for us...we never finished...smiles

  3. Your images fit the form beautifully. They make me wish I'd paid more intention to Grandma's instruction when I was a kid--she's gone now and it would be lovely to imitate her motions, the ones you describe so well.

  4. What an elegant tangle of words! Your poem reflects the theme-and-variations of the stitches. I like to crochet, too.

  9. I think I should take this as my mantra! A crochet hook has never been far from my hand for about the past 62 years - I got hooked young! Thanks go to my cousin, who had the patience to teach a nine year old the basic stitches. :)

  12. I love the form and you've found a line that bears repeat. Many have taken the knitting/crochet angle here, both meditative activities, almost as good as writing.

  13. I wish I had the ability to knit .. too much arthritis in my old fingers. You elevated knitting to an art form.
